Bengal CM; Start of Endless Meetings Following BJP’s Record Breaking 207-seat Win
Amit Shah was appointed as central observer in BJP legislature party leader elections ahead of formation of the first-ever BJP-led government in West Bengal.
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and central observer for BJP legislature party leader elections, landed in Kolkata International Airport early Saturday morning, beginning an important journey toward deciding West Bengal’s new chief minister and deputy chief ministers.
Mohan Charan Majhi, the Chief Minister of Odisha, and the BJP’s central co-observer, joined Amit Shah in reaching Kolkata. Both the senior leaders of the BJP held endless meetings at a private hotel in Newtown along with other central and state-level leaders of the BJP, who led West Bengal’s electoral campaign.
According to the members of the party, there was much more than just an official ceremony at the meetings. Discussions focused on formulating the immediate roadmap for the incoming government, where the selection of the probable chief minister and deputy chief ministers was supposed to be made on the same day. Sources of the BJP party stated that a high-level committee in Delhi had been informed about the views of observers regarding who would lead the new government.
Also, as planned, Mr Shah will hold talks with all 207 BJP MLA’s in the afternoon on Saturday at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre – which will become a platform to officially confirm the selection of legislature party leaders. According to the BJP MP Jyotirmoy Mahato: “Today, the HM, who is the central observer for the election of the leader of the legislature party, will meet the newly elected MLAs. The meeting will settle who will be the legislative party leader and deputy CM.
On arrival, Shah, accompanied by the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and state BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, had made a stop at the Dakhineswar Temple to perform puja there. Through an official post in his Twitter account, Shah thanked the people of Bengal for their “unfettered love, trust and support” to the BJP.
In another historical decision taken by the BJP, the date set for the swearing in of the newly elected government in West Bengal is May 9 – Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore. PM Modi is due to reach Kolkata on Saturday. Chief Ministers from as many as 20 BJP-governed states will be present for this swearing-in event that will crown a party’s long fight to get its foot in what used to be the impregnable bastion of the Trinamool Congress.
